I lived and worked in Moscow from 2005 to 2007. Here are the things that I encountered.

The very first night I stayed in Moscow a person was shot and killed in the yard of the apartment building where I was staying. The next morning the police was going through the building looking for witnesses. Turned out the person was a banker’s bodyguard.

A colleague of mine, a software engineer in his early thirties, was assaulted and beaten on a street by a group of hooligans for no apparent reason. They did not try to rob him, did not claim or demand anything, so it seems they were heaving fun that way. He had to be hospitalized.

Groups of individuals calling themselves football fans would occasionally enter a subway train with an obvious intention to provoke trouble with the passengers. And during rush hours in the subway system, when it is difficult to squeeze yourself into the train, the passengers could be quite pushy and aggressive.

In addition to that I kept seeing corruption in various places, like wages delivered in envelops, university diplomas for sale for everyone interested, police officers looking for ways to get a bribe and so on. Which to some extent explains why the things the way they are.

Even though I personally never felt threatened in Moscow, I would definitely not call it a safe city.

Moscow is not safe, the number of marginalized people of all kinds (from drug addicts to psychopaths) flocking to the capital from all over the country is simply HUGE (when i say huge is HUGE!), this is not taking into account the millions of migrants from Central Asia (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and so on), of course the probability is that it’s YOU become a victim of a drunk driver/junkie/psychopath - it’s small, yes, but don’t forget that murders are committed every day and every hour, it's just OTHER people die.

The comments of angry ukrainians and some brainwashed westerners are ridiculous. Moscow is cleaner and safer than most of the largest cities in Europe and US, it's just a fact. The only thing is try not to kiss men in public and do not wave the rainbow flag

"Contrary to previos comments, people are MURDERED because of thir race or clothes (and especially because of their gender and sexual orientation)"

Total bullshit. MURDERED BECAUSE OF THEIR GENDER. Well, yeah. We don`t love women, we kill them :)
In fact, Moscow is really safe. I walk at night without fear, not even in the city center

This city may be safe, but the sexism, homphobia, and xenophobia (natioanlism) are VERY big problems of Moscow and the whole Russia. People are bigoted and agressive. Even if some tourists never encountered these problems - I have: I was living in Moscow for 28 years. If you are "different" or is not bland and grey as a typical russian citizen - you will be looked at obliquely, possibly verbally attacked, rejected. The country and its people is extremely hostile to individuality and does not accept freedom of expression. Especially now, when the war is ongoing.

Contrary to previos comments, people are MURDERED because of thir race or clothes (and especially because of their gender and sexual orientation). It won't change in the near future, as such behaviour and agression is state-backed. Is someone tells you that there are no nationalism and xenophobia in Russia - he either lies, or doesn't kknow what the situation in Russia is.

Even here it is fake filled by russians mostly. This crime rating looks like a joke ...
Russia is a country-terrorist and it cannot be safe. It's their native mentality.

Moscow is one of the safest cities I've ever been too. You may like or dislike Russia and politics attached, but it's one of the cleanest, safest European cities there is. Absolutelly sure safer than Paris, Rome, New York, and Berlin.

#Lois Ford the United States is enemies of Russia because the government hate Russia but some American people love Russia and some Russian people love United States but it;s ok you’re still allowed in Moscow
Zm on Aug 24, 2021:
More than 100 different nations live in Russia and Moscow. You shouldn't worry about problems based on nationality. Moscow is becoming safer every year. Dont listen to anonymous, it’s safer here than in Athens, Belgrade, Kiev and many European cities. Here you will not find scammers like in the cities of Italy and France.

I advise you not to risk visiting Russia because the Russian people are racist, barbaric and very savage, Russia is a country of prostitution, crime, corruption and racism, and these characteristics are unique to Russia without other European countries.
Victor Muraviev on Feb 12, 2021:
Wonderful place. If it were to be less corrupt it would be absolutely flawless.
Anonymous on Jan 05, 2021:
So many Russophobic comments here. Most cities are quite safe. Just use common sense, and don’t walk in dark or dangerous looking places.
Anonymous on Jan 02, 2021:
We have always been deceived by the media and we used to see Russia as the country of a thousand and one nights, but this is completely wrong. Russia is a country that is not suitable for a visit, and the Russian people have a very strange character. The Russians are thirsty for violence and bloodshed, selfish and misunderstand people.
The bottom line is that visiting Russia or interacting with the Russians is not recommended and is not recommended.
