I am living in Vienna for over 3 years, and feel so much safer than living in the States.
A few times a year i visit my home country and am always happy to be back in safe Austria.
Often I go for a long walk at night in Vienna, around 9pm, almost daily. It's a safe place here. Yes, I avoid parks, but that's about it. It's safe and it's a great place to live.
Yes, there are idiots out there and yes, stupid things can potentially happen like they can happen anywhere.
On the other hand I also lived in a big city in Florida where we forgot to close the garage door quite often. Nothing ever happened. But even with a closed garage door the windows and doors in the US (and I saw 20 states) are so much easier to break into than in Austria and Germany. Quite interesting to see. No wonder they break in less in Vienna - it's much harder to do!
Anyway, back to Vienna. Love it here. Being aware of bad guys is always a good idea, no matter where you are.
You don't have to avoid any districts due to security problems, because even the most dangerous corners of Vienna are not as dangerous as Berlin, Cologne, etc.
