NZ loves to compare their lifestyle and way of living to Scandinavian nations yet the reality is they are just a richer PNG or Fiji with white people. This country is expensive, Switzerland prices for 3rd world products and services. They are delusional to think that their 1800s, damp, cold, moulded, uninsulated, & dilapidated homes are worth $1M NZD when it will even be a hard sell $200K NZD. Their skilled and intelligent citizens are like rats jumping a sinking ship to OZ.
GoingGone on Jan 18, 2024:
NZ is nice for a visit but a difficult place to live in thanks to high prices, low income and shall we say the attitude of the locals. I've travelled a bit now and found NZ to be the most expensive by far. Housing is especially expensive (either renting or buying), pretty much on-par with Sydney, London and New York but your income will be vastly lower.

I am DYING to move to Europe mainly to be able to visit family more often than every 4-5 years, but after living here 20 years pretty much the only place where you can transfer some of the work skills would be UK (because I only speak English...); All the brits here which I asked if they would go back, say no; mainly because of crime and violence in your everyday life. That is not YET the case here. There is crime, I perfectly agree, and it is definitely on the rise and is getting more violent (last 6 years with Labour made a lot of damage to society but people still did not learn, they still voted with Winston who sold the country to the socialists in the first place...). But honestly, for me this crime is all on TV. It largely depends on what street you are, even in the same area. Where I live I find it still pretty safe to have morning walks before sunrise. Hopefully that will not change soon...

I would LOVE to move to UK but with the wages over there (GBP 40 - 50k) , there is no way we secure jobs to give us the same saving power or relative lifestyle. I would love the opportunity to travel somewhere meaningful with 1-2 hrs flights for $20 or drive a full day to get there. Cannot do much of that here. Another hill, another cow or sheep... Imagine on a long weekend you fly 2 hrs from UK, land let's say in Paris, Vienna or Zurich... you cannot really compare that with a weekend in Rotorua, can you? But then, can you afford that travel say every 3 months on GBP80k/year? (that accounts for 2x GBP40/year) I do not believe so...

How far down the wages scale would you get to have that life, being close to pretty much everything worth seeing (I mean Europe). The question would make sense to you only if you are here from Europe too.

Going through the above comments and remarks concerning the daily way of life one gets discouraged and begins to have second thoughts before making a decision to migrate
or even visit New Zealand as a tourist for that matter.People. Hope things change for the better.
Christopher on Aug 14, 2023:
The quality of the houses is very bad, crime and pollution is higher than the figures suggest.

And the price you are supposed to cough up for all that is absurd.
Nancy Mendes on Jul 24, 2023:

Jean Paul Motteux on Jul 11, 2023:

New Zealand used to be a good country to immigrate to but not anymore. Things are extremely expensive healthcare is really bad and is mostly for moari people crime is also bad , this country has gone down hill very fast and is becomming more third world, people are laeving going mostly to Australia Canada and the US . Most educated people leave.Taxes are High and you get nothing for it, roads education everything is bad

New Zealand dollar is losing its value at a rapid rate. This is a country in serious trouble
Marama Kepu on Jun 10, 2023:

New Zealand has changed sadly its not the place it used to be, crime is out of control with no consequences, NZ is very expensive and the Jobs are low paid. There has been a huge exodus from NZ people are leaving in droves. There are alot of political issues here too in NZ , I would seriously not move here at this time
DJ on Nov 19, 2022:
Hi,

I am looking for some serious comments,

I am looking to move from London to Auckland, I am seeing a lot of comments mentioning crime rate, sh*t hole ect..

What is the case out there?
Dave on Nov 11, 2022:
Lots of great info here. Thanks! Can somebody add fields to transportation and utilities? Possible to include insurance (auto and contents insurance)? Might also consider including cost of auto maintenance, perhaps: oil change, tire rotation, brake service?
danny dog on Oct 26, 2022:

Solarnut on Jul 03, 2022:
I'm trying to think of a good reason why anyone should go to NZ and I cant think of any, especially Auckland what a hole.
Tama on Jul 02, 2022:
Do not ever think of moving to auckland or even new Zealand. Crime is rampant with no consequence . The cost of living is so high I moved over from Australia for a while and couldn't handle it there are Soo many feral people in Auckland and everything so expensive. Most of the educated have left
JustCrazy on Jun 14, 2022:
Auckland/NZ is very very expensive, not just the obvious stuff like petrol, rent and food. No EVERYTHING is just so expensive you just couldnt label it anything other than a complete ripoff. Expect to pay $1000 per week for a rental you would actually want to live in, flying internationally is cheaper than flying domestically; want to go to Hobbiton well that is easily a $1000 day trip for a family, same for most attractions like the Rotorua hot pools, local council fees, building fees, car registration and maintenance fees, absolutely everything is a ripoff. Combine these price extortions with NZ's low wages and high tax rates and it is impossible to get ahead here. I finally followed through on my threats to move to Australia and I am just appalled at how much cheaper life is here compared to Auckland, NZ really has lost the plot.
Anonymous on Apr 22, 2022:
Auckland is to expensive, inflation in New Zealand currently sitting at close to 7%. Auckland has two supermarket chains and they are controlled the price of food a its been proven that they are making massive profits by over charging for basic food . Gas is expensive and rent is just highway robbery you pay to much for housing that is not even up to basic living standard, as well as there being a housing crisis that progressive governments have failed to address and to buy a house is so far put of reach of an average person it's not funny this coupled with a council that is 900 million in debt . My advice to anyone is unless you are in a job that earns well then don't move here
Anonymous on Mar 28, 2022:
expensive af. Gas prices are like $4 per liter (1 liter is about 0.26 gallons) and the aussies across the ditch are complaining about $2 a liter
Kevin Fraser on Sep 21, 2021:
I apologise SINCERELY to COKE..
It was anonymous I was responding to.
The reason "anonymous" does not put their name is they can hide from the responsibility of misinformation.
Once again, COKE, I am very sorry.
Kevin Fraser on Sep 21, 2021:
Coke is delusionary. Auckland is muti-cultural.
NZ citizens can indeed leave the country, marry non NZrs and return.
Perhaps Coke can explain the Mosques and Temples?
Please ignore Coke's comments. It is likely Coke is trying to protect some vision he has for the country.
Kevin Fraser on Sep 21, 2021:
My posts are accurate.. I was born in NZ 61 years ago. Other than a 4yr OE stint in the 1980s have lived here all my life. Brought up 4 kids.Grew up in Mt Roskill, lived in Swanson now am in Sth Auckland..my comments are accurate. ..
Coke on May 29, 2021:
How Does the after tax income of Auckland come to nzd 5000???

that number corresponds to a yearly income of NZ$78000(before tax), anyone who live in NZ think it's reasonable??
Anonymous on Feb 12, 2021:
It's very obvious immigrant and Kevin Fraser posts aren't correct at all.New Zealand isn't any different than Ireland or Poland.Since I'm a New Zealander by birth and my entire family are New Zealanders whom have lived in Auckland forever we should know just by walking around especially in the downtown area Muslims,Africans, and Asians are nonexistent in our country.Russian trols will post anything and everything just to achieve 30 rubles per responce. New Zealand has always been a closed society intentionally to keep rifraf out of our country.Media can say anything they want globally about trade with other countries but those are fabricated lies.As far as media goes in New Zealand there's very tight controls upon element before it's allowed to be broadcasted anywhere in New Zealand. As far as what immigrant said about New Zealand kicking anyone out for remarks of discrimination goes. Neither of the posters actually live in New Zealand truth be known let alone work in New Zealand. Those ethnic groups aren't even allowed to visit New Zealand along with many other ethnic groups.Covid19 is nonexistent throughout New Zealand for this reason,we don't want your diseases or any other comunicable diseases other countries gladly share. If any New Zealander chooses to leave and marry anyone of non New Zealand blood they cannot return to New Zealand and they cannot bring their spouse to New Zealand either. That's how it really is immigrant and Kevin Fraser I cannot see anymore of your comments you're blocked now.
kevin fraser on Feb 10, 2021:
An earlier comment about NZ not needing anyone's money or not allowing Muslims or Asians even to visit is incorrect.
The only reason generally speaking, we are not allowing visitors into the country is because of Covid 19..
In regards to not importing or exporting nothing, that is also totally incorrect.
Any reader should disregard that contributor‘s post.
Immigrant on Jan 26, 2021:
NZ doesn't analyse any person on basis of ethnicity, religion, etc. I am an asian and allowed to stay here because my skills are required here.
A beautiful country. Very systematic and politically very correct country.
Someone even commenting based on discrimination is enough to be kicked out of NZ.
Anonymous on Jan 23, 2021:
New Zealand is expensive intentionally to keep paupers, out of our country.Even if a person has networth of 1 million usd or more than means nothing to New Zealanders.People outside of New Zealand have visited that are worth hundreds of million dollars and even billionaires too. But we've turned away those well healed types as well because New Zealanders don't need anyone's money never did. We don't allow Muslims into our country Africans or asians either not even to visit. We are our own country non-political non-religious.We import and export absolutely nothing We've never had one case of covid19 or one infection. Real-estate agencies in New Zealand aren't allowed to sell any Real-estate to anyone from any other countries.
Oscar on Nov 16, 2020:
A word of caution to immigrants, the housing situation in New Zealand is reaching a tipping point, even if you manage to get a good job with higher than average salary, the economic system of this country is rigging the game in favour of rich people and real estate investors. It is a beautiful country, and it has some really nice people, but unfortunately it is becoming incredible difficult if you are not wealthy or already have a home here. You have been warned
