I went to Blumenau for a couple days, spent half a day walking around the downtown. I expected more Germans, but mostly people looked Portuguese, Spanish or Italian. Reasonably affluent looking, not a 3rd world look. Looked clean, people polite and helpful. I found that with Spanish you could just get by, English more in hotels. Taxis fine there, and available. "Quality Inn", 4 stars was very good, including food.
This city and area are supposed to be the safest in Brazil with least crime. But in a inside, mini mall, I saw 3 guards recharging an ATM. One had a large shotgun or rifle he kept pointed down the hall!? Makes you wonder, why he needed to do that?
