Update from myself as of mid 2024. I have lived in Glasgow for 8 years and have seen costs here go up (and continue to).

Rent: £1020. This is rent capped and also in the West End, going rate now would be around £1300 for a 2 bed in the West End with a living room, kitchen and 3 piece suite in the bathroom.
Gas & Electric: £112 on fixed tariff.
Internet: £28 with Virgin Media (haggle down if you are a recurring customer) for ultra fast broadband.
Mobile: £10 for 20GB data with Giffgaff.
Council tax: £170.
Groceries: £450. (Me and my boyfriend try to eat healthy so our bill here is higher as we buy a lot of fresh food).
Public transport: £20, we both WFH so don't use it much. Bus is around £5 return, a Subway card if you are close to the network will mean a day return is around £3.50. Trains to city centre are around £2 return with a railcard.
Gym: £28 for PureGym, £58 for more upmarket gyms like Nuffield.
Clothes: I spend around £50 monthly
Leisure: Pubs nowadays would be around £5 for a pint, £8 for double spirit and mix. I spend around £300 a month on socialising.

Give my update as well!

Rent: £1200 (2 Bed, 1 bathroom, fully furnished, new building, West End so it’s full of pubs, coffeeshops and close to the city centre) sharing with a flatmate so £600 per month
Council tax: £170 sharing with flatmate so £85
Utilities: £160 sharing with flatmate so £80 per person but we keep the heating all the time and it’s about 20C in the apartment even at night. Would be a lot cheaper in summer
Internet: £38, sharing so £19
Mobile: £13.5
Groceries: £200
Public transport: £20 (don’t really use it often as I wfh)
Leisure and restaurants: £250 (I do lots of takeaways and have too much coffee)
Clothes: like about £100
Gym: £33

So it’s roughly £1320 per month.

Earning £2170 after tax as a junior programmer

This leaves me with about £850 per month to save up or travel (which I do a lot)

Average monthly salary £2420?? No way, just jump on Indeed and the 90% of jobs are about minimum wage.

Hmmm, inflation running amok, but £4 a pint of beer? You can drink in a pub and pay £3, don't go trendy lol. Supermarkets it's under £1 for 1/2 litre. A decent bottle of wine = £5.

Art Galleries and Museums = free entry. I wouldn't argue about the other prices.

Along the same lines. Got offered £45k for a family of 3. Is that doable for a decent standard of living? Our fun includes a lot of nature, museums and festivals. We don't really eat out much (once or twice a month). Thanks!

We've been living in Glasgow for 1 year. Our monthly expenses:

Rent: £600 (2 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, Nice and Cosy, 20 mins away from the city center)
Council Tax: £140
Elec & Gas: £75
Internet: £21.5 (Talktalk 30 Mbps)
Mobile: £12 x 2 = £24 (giffgaff 11 GB data, unlimited call)
Kitchen: £300 (Using ALDI to save money. ALDI Rocks!)
Public Transport: £90
Social: What was that? I hate Covid!

People are kind and friendly in Glasgow. We have great neighbors. The weather is kinda "shiet" but we love Glasgow.

Is Glasgow a good place for an American to retire? Is it better to rent a place or buy a home. I would be moving by myself so I wouldn't need much space
