I have just got back from Suva after 4 years of beautiful life over there, and I find the comments below pretty shallow and silly. Fiji is a lovely p lace and people are friendly and mellow. The public function is not the strongest asset of Fiji and it is on the average dysfunctional. Fiji scores pretty low in the "ease of making business" because of all the hurdles posed by their overwhelming bureaucracy. Opening a business can take up to a couple of years, but I would say that one year is the norm. However, in their way, they are trying to help you and do try, but Western standards of efficiency obviously clash with theirs. There is a saying that goes "Fiji time", which means thet you need to relax and enjoy the journey rather than the outcome. If you do want everything fast and western standards, ell easy, do not go to Fiji and then complain about it. Gather information before, not after or you will risk to look silly as the people who commented below. If you go to Fiji, please know that: time is a different concept over there; people smile and have a great way to relate to you, however they hate people who shout, put tremendous pressure and make them feel uncomfortable; remember that you are not at your home but in theirs, behave accordingly. Yes resorts may be expensive but there are plenty for backpackers and middle range. Lux is lux everywhere in the world. If you want lux, the pay for it and stop moaning about it. Prices are not really what have been advertised in this page, they are higher I would say of a good 25% and rents increased tremendously in the last two years. A three bedroom house with a tiny garden may cost up to 1700 euros per month. A meal never costs less than 12/15 euros but in a good restaurant one may pay 30 euros without wine. There are only few decent restaurant in Suva: Eden, Tikko (the boat), Governors, the restaurant of the Holiday Inn, Paradiso, the Korean grillhouse, the Chinese dumpling store in the city centre, a new Vietnamese in Garden city. The others are not worth a visit. Bars are also not good, exception made for the bar of the GPH (if you have time to waste), Bulaccino. However, if one doesn't make a fuss, can drink a beverage everywhere. Supermarket are now enormously better than only three years ago and there are at least three that can sell good things: New World (attention to the expiration dates), Fresh, Extra.
