The previous commenter's statements are 100% accurate. If you're traveling solo as a tourist, avoid Arad as it's an unsafe city compared to other cities in this region of Europe. Gangs are present in the city and harass people daily, especially in the train station area, Downtown, and Electrometal. One of the beggars started following me at the train station and almost robbed me. But honestly I didn't feel safe in any part of this city, there is also a very unfriendly vibe towards you if you're Hungarian, this country is known for being chauvinistic/turbonationalistic which is pretty sad considering that Arad is a historical Hungarian city built by Hungarians. This city has a low number of police officers and police stations, and they are highly corrupt. So if you're looking for beautiful and safe cities in this region, visit Oradea, Timisoara, or Szeged instead of this dump.

It has low criminality because the police is corrupt and if something happens to you you would be better to "get over it". There are a lot of gangs especially in the eastern part. If you are thinking to go out at noght at a pub or somethig, you should be really carefull when leaving, gangs or homeless gipsies can follow you and mug you or even worse. Very low number of policemens and even if they see something bad happening, most of them look away and leave. There are some safer places where there is a lot of traffic but if you don't knownthe town you could easily end up in a bad neighborhood where there is a high cance that you will have an unpleasant time.
