the quality of life in Elliot Lake is great compared to larger cities. I was here in the fifties when it was being built. trailer parks too many and construction sites and migrant workers. I left and came back in 1967 a married woman with 2 children. My husband worked in the mines until close in 1992. We had 3 more children while living here. They are very successful women from oldest to youngest. Myself worked here as a chef and as a waitress and managed a kitchen in a local mall. In 1980 I applied for a job in the mines and became a heavy equipment operator and worked there for 12 years that is when it closed. Pollution here is a lot less than in Toronto or other large cities. Most think we are the capital of radiation pollution of the world but I don't believe that as radon gas occurs naturally all over the earth. Radon levels are higher in Ottawa than here, as well as other cities. Elliot Lake is Federally Ledgistrated so our levels are monitored. The cost of living is no worse than it is in other smaller communities. Our Health care has taken a nose dive since the Covid crisis. Lak of Doctors coming into our area, Nurses retiring and younger ones going to bigger cities to work. Property prices are in line with other areas, lake front being the most expensive. Traffic is not so great here at the moment as Hillside Road is under construction. Hwy 108 is busy with workers shoppers and visitors and deliveries to our stores. Would I like to live any where else NO! I have and came back. Elliot Lake has a lot to offer if one is not so critical of things they do not quite understand. We have Lakes, woods, fishing, Nature at it's best here, fresh air, beaches, hiking trails scenic routes many places to explore, what more could a person want.
