I am from NYC and spend lots of time in Guanajuato capital Mexico. The city of Guanajuato is generally safe, and I feel it is a lot safer than downtown NYC. Crime in Guanajuato usually involves thieves wanting money. It is seldom violent, and you should take precautions while in this city to diminish it or minimize losses. One thing you can do is to never carry all your money in a wallet. Put 500 pesos aside in case you are mugged. Don't fight with the assailants. Just give them whatever money you have put aside. While a lot of the violent crime in cities like NYC is 'for fun crime' where an assailant will slash your face or stab you in the back unprovoked just to avenge some perceived inequity, here in Guanajuato the crime is of a completely different nature. In the past 3 months I have only heard of one person being mugged from my many expat friends.

Further caution:
Avoid walking in the callejones at night. Don't go through tunnels at any time unless you are accompanied. If you are going home late at night take a taxi-- they are inexpensive. Further, if you are staying at a hotel with an open window to the street and on the first floor, make sure to keep valuables away from the windows. When using ATMs make sure they are in main street and never do it late at night. Protect camaras and phones. Much crime I have heard about in this city involves stolen camaras or phones. If you are working on your laptop at a cafe, don't leave your laptop unattended.

Taking these precautions will diminish greatly the chances of being robbed in the city of Guanajuato.
