Yes it is not a leave your door open kind of town. But where is? Unlike Turkey criminals in Australia get off lightly, no floggings or overcrowded cockroach-ridden prisons where prisoners regularly end up dead in Australia. Yes, there is a major drug problem and more should be done about it. Why who knows. If you get caught up in that scene..well it's your own downfall.
I have lived here for 12 years and never felt threatened by violence and had one bike nicked ( and I know who did it, and they were very drunk). I have lived in Sydney and Brisbane and would not walk at night. In Hervey Bay, my wife and I regularly walk 4 or 5k home after dinner at night along the Esplanade and watch the moon glinting off the calm waters.
Sure if you are into getting drunk you could be a victim...anywhere.
The drug people tend to keep to themself and as it is a methamine problem tend to be pretty antisocial when on or wiped out when recovering. Drugs lead to crime and housebreaking but not one of our friends has been burgled. Again they tend to stick to their own.
The council has changed and the area gets more beautiful every day.
