Please note that reported crime in Rockford is perceived to be higher than other places because Rockford Police Department crime stats are the only crime stats in any city in the region to be successfully audited by the FBI for accuracy. Also, "aggravated assault" rates can depend on how a case gets prosecuted, since there is no national standard for how to define and prosecute a case. In other jurisdictions, violent crimes can be prosecuted as misdemeanors, which does not show up in these stats. This does not mean things are fine and perfect, but a more objective study of the numbers suggest Rockford is similar to other Rust Belt cities, and probably safer than most southern cities.
