I love Albuquerque, but it has become increasingly expensive to live here since the pandemic. Rents have become unaffordable, and purchasing a house or condo is impossible for many people who live here. This is a charming city with friendly people and a very open, welcoming atmosphere. The city's Spanish heritage and culture are woven into daily life in a manner that is unique to New Mexico and can be seen in the food, language, dance, music and traditions. One problem I didn't expect when I came here is the serious problems with healthcare delivery. Even though the University of NM has a medical school in Albuquerque, we have a severe shortage of physicians because the state reimbursements for state and federal medical programs is extremely low. Doctors don't stay- they don't get paid enough. So the crappy ones are the only ones who stick around. It's a very serious problem. I really like living here overall, but the problems with medical care, crime and housing costs might make it impossible to stay.
